HMI gets hot in the market, more products launch

Filed under: general, management and buisness, NEW BORN TO THE MARKET — boopathivenugopal @ 1:55 am

HMI market is looking bright in the market. Many manufacturers are gradually launching new products. According to a recent report of IMS HMI, HMI market is expanding incredibly on the global market and is expected to reach the output of 151 million US dollars at annual rate, with CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) reaching 25.4%, of which 7.9% is the touch screen panel products and 31.7% for Open HMI.

HMI market is growing fast in recent years. According to IMS report, the global market of HMI is quickly growing. It is expected that the production output is to reach 151 million US dollars in the year 2008. The CAGR is 25.4%, of which 7.9% for touch screen monitor interface and 31.7% for Open HMI. The experts predict that with upcoming 5 to 6 years, touch screen interface and Open HMI will be the focal point of development, which encourages many IPC manufactures to launch a series of HMI products.

IPC manufacturers indicate that although the majority of HMI architectures is pessimistic-oriented, Open HMI structure that uses PC-based system such as standardized format and communication interface is able to provide calculating and processing on the PC-based platform. Manufacturers also say that the reason for Open HMI superior to traditional HMI is that Open HMI features no hardware and fanless design and provides advanced functions such as data processing and standard interface. In the foreseeable future, Open architecture and Embedded technology will be greatly used in HMI in all industries.

The current OSs that most manufacturers use for Open HMI structure support Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP embedded and Windows CE 5.0 but little do they support WEPOS system. As regards to the pessimistic-designed HMIs, most manufacturers, in addition to adopting IT technology, begin to expand its applications on facilities such as intelligent Building Automation and pleasure boats, which are regarded as potential development.

Fuji Electric

Fuji Electric is a giant HMI manufacturer with a long history for being a supplier. FA (Factory Automation) business and technical supervisor He, jhen-wun says that HMI used to be thought as a press-button function that has replaced PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). But in the recent years, it has changed into a programmable device which installs with different software that increases its power by powerful CPU. Today HMI is responsible for processing calculation and reduces the burden of PLC.

Recently they launch their products of TELLUS and V-Service series. Both enhance the powerful PC capabilities. TELLUS undertakes remote monitoring, using the frontline of HMI to connect PC in the factory. You can view the screen on the HMI and can also control PLC directly from PC, which enable multiple control. V-Service can retain historical records, recording every configuration setting to help the better adjustment next time.

1

Figure 1: He, jhen-wun, technical and business director of FA, says that HMI used to be treated simply as a button for PLC but has gradually turned into a programmable device.

Delta Electronic

Delta is one of the few manufacturers to use TFT-LCD technology to develop 16:9 widescreen and 65536 color. The project manager of Delta, Li, jia-jyun indicates that it increases the size of the screen by 46%, using 16:9, instead of 4:3. In addition to RS-232 and RS485, DOPB200 also designs Ethernet and USB port to largely increase its expansions. DOPB200 also designs Audio output to use it as a warning system of the factory sites.

In terms of production output, Delta’s major product line focuses on 5.7 inches but this has retreated to a “red-ocean” market in which philosophy of quantity better than price. To prevent from this cause, Delta will continuously expand it screen size from 5.7 to 7 inches to avoid the red-ocean market.

Arbor Technology

Arbor used to focus on the development of traditional Panel PC. As HMI gradually becomes PC-based, its architecture has more applications and the mature technology that the giant manufacturers use low power consumption and embedded CPU architecture on the industry. Hence, Arbor further develops the research on the industrial goods, investing a great deal of research cost and labor in the Open HMI and Human Machine Controller.

There are four current product lines including FTPC (Fanless Touch Panel Computing), IPPC (Industrial Panel PC), FPM (Flat Panel Monitor Display), Arpex (Universal Engine Advance Box PC). PC-based HMI is a high-end product and certainly used for high-end industry. Arbor provides almost every size of HMI products from 5.7 to 17 inches, which belongs to the layer between control layer and management layer. In three more years ahead, Arbor will extend its applications vertically and integrate industrial internet and wireless technology based on Open HMI.

Wintek

Wintek is one of the few manufacturers that focus on HMI. Its products are available from 4.3 to 15 inches. Wintek indicates that HMI used mainly to reveal data and control monitoring. But today as there is a call for higher missions to achieve, which include product analysis, integration of data and parameter, internet applications and remote control, etc.

Wintek recently launches MT 8000 as its main product which is both HMI and data exchange center. It connects all kinds of MT 8000 to process information exchange via Ethernet and retrieves data from SCADA that runs on HMI. As for software products, Wintek promotes a new compiler, EasyBuilder 8000, to allow customers to quickly compile the software they need.

Pro-fibus

Pro-fibus is a professional HMI manufacturers. The general manager, Song ben, jhih ji, says that HMI used to work independently in different automation process facilities. But in recent years, the integration makes automation system to connect via Ethernet and helps expedite the data flow. HMI makes information more clear and easy to understand. Pro-fibus has long acknowledged this fact.

As for GP 3000 as its hit product, this series of products has been in the market in Japan for three years. The production line is pretty complete. GP 3000 is built with 64 bit RISC CPU that reaches good performance both on dustproof and shake proof. Alternatively, it also provides all kinds of software development kits that allow the system integration suppliers to reduce the time on product design. There is a specific function that connects to the camera that allows 60-minute recording the occurring event for reference in the future.

2

Figure 2: Song Ben Jhih Ji, the general manager of Pro-fibus indicates that the trends for automation process integration in recent years make the data flow move even faster, thanks to Ethernet connection, in particular, the role that the HMI plays on the information transparency.

Siemens

Siemens has always been a key player in the industrial control and HMI market. The hardware provides 3 to 19 inch products that include dust-proof IP65 with two different types to choose from: touch screen and button types. The software is the WinCC product with its SCADA runs on PC-based system.

Siemens launches a handheld mobile HMI that is rarely seen in the market. The PM Luo, long siang says that HMI is generally fixed on the machines but is unable to fix on the robotic hand. However, with handheld mobile HMI, operators may conduct surveillance and operation, using this device. This device has a hot swap function that allows removing from one machine to another without disconnecting the on-going operation.

Aplex technology

Aplex is an IPC manufacturer itself, responsible for the market of Panel PC and industrial computer. In the realm of HMI market, Aplex targets its HMI on open architecture. Chad Lee, the general manager, says that Aplex uses two kinds of processors: RISC and X86. The recently launched product uses ARM processor on PXA255 architecture with resolution from 800*600 to 1024*768, I/O connection ports ranging from RS-232 Serial Port to the built-in Ethernet and USB ports. The storage devices of CF and SD cards that display CCD images can be arranged by a modular design, which allows users with an alternative solution.

Cermate Technologies

Cermate’s HMI has a wide range of product applications on industrial control as well as architecture, building automation and factory automation. Cermate is mainly an OEM company with its customers as Honeywell and Siemens. Cermate furthers its corporation with Italy manufacturer EXOR. Both cooperate on the mutual-benefit basis. Cermate is both an OEM company and sole agent in the European market.

The regional marketing director, Li, wan lin indicates that Taiwan IT products are reputable worldwide. We hope to enter the global market starting from Taiwan market. As for the market share, Taiwan, China and the US account separately for one third market share. China is not so demanding the quality and there is low entry barrier to the market. Both Taiwan and the US are responsible for high and middle end market.

3

Figure 3: Kevin, regional chief of sales department at Cermate Technologies indicates that we insist on our products manufactured in Taiwan because Taiwan has enjoyed a reputation worldwide in this field. We hope to enter the market from Taiwan perspective.

Hitech Electronics

Hitech was acquired in 2005 by the giant European company of Beijer Electronics AB but it remains the original title of the company and has an independent ownership. ChiChie Hsu indicates that European companies prefer the exterior design of the product while Taiwan has more emphasis on the internal functions. Once there is an acquisition, it may achieve a synergy effect. Hsu points out that Beijer has won iF award on product design in Germany, which is a leadership of the industry.

In addition to appearance, Beijer’s HMI has full and complete functions such as RS-232, Ethernet, USB that are the main specs in the market. Because of little differences in internal technologies among the competitors, Beijer has moved its strategy to the exterior design of the product. Hsu further remarks that HMI has extended its applications from industrial control to building automation and pleasure boats. These realms of applications are specifically demanding the product design that has always been a competitive advantage for Beijer Electronics.

LG LX5550 (Fusic) Best multimedia phone

LG LX5550 (Fusic)

It’s no coincidence that Sprint’s LG LX5550 somewhat resembles an iPod. Beyond making calls, the LX550 boasts solid music capabilities, including the first FM transmitter in a cell phone. The remaining feature offerings are plentiful; you’ll find Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, 3G support for streaming video, and an expandable memory slot–all in an appealing, compact design. And it makes good calls, too.

Plantronics Discovery Bluetooth headset Best Bluetooth headset

Plantronics Discovery Bluetooth headset

Keeping the road warrior and the commuter in mind, the Plantronics Discovery 640 is a quality Bluetooth headset with satisfying performance and innovative charging options. In fact, we liked the Discovery 640 so much that it won our Editors’ Choice award.

Samsung MM-A900 Best 3G phone

Samsung MM-A900

It’s a no-brainer that other manufacturers would scramble to mimic the popular slim design of the Razr, and with its MM-A900, Samsung is the first to offer a reproduction. Offered only by Sprint, the Samsung MM-A900 equals the Razr’s thin profile but raises the bar with a couple of refinements and some extra features not found on the Motorola handset, including a 1.3-megapixel camera with a swiveling lens and a flash, an MP3 player, and support for Sprint’s new 3G network.

Nokia 6102 Best midrange phone

Nokia 6102

Though the fanciest cell phones tend to get all the glory, many cell phone users are satisfied with a simple handset for making calls, with a couple of extra features. For your consideration, we offer up the Nokia 6102 for Cingular. Nokia’s most successful implementation of the flip phone, the dependable 6102 offers a solid set of midrange features in an attractive, compact design.

Motorola Pebl U6 Sexiest phone

Motorola Pebl U6

Sporting a sophisticated and very soothing design, the Motorola Pebl U6 for T-Mobile is so striking that it deserves to be named as one of the most attractive cell phones ever made. Under the hood, it comes with a decent range of features, though we were hoping for a higher-resolution camera. As with all of Motorola’s design-centric phones, we weren’t impressed with the controls, but the Pebl nonetheless is a looker and a solid performer

Nokia N80 Best camera phone

Nokia N80

A quick scan of the N80′s features list shows a focus on imagery, as the phone boasts a sharp 3-megapixel camera, a second VGA camera, and image-editing apps. Though it’s probably one of the most robust camera phones we’ve seen to date, it’s not all about pictures. The quad-band N80 is a Symbian smart phone and yes, it makes good calls.

Sony Ericsson W600i Best world phone

Sony Ericsson W600i

Overall, the Sony Ericsson W600i is a well-designed, feature-rich, and high-functioning mobile that solidly incorporates multimedia features into the phone’s form factor. World phone support keeps you in touch when you’re abroad, the camera will help you remember the sights, and the MP3 player will entertain you on long plane rides.

Kyocera KX444 Best basic phone

Kyocera KX444

Based loosely on the company’s previous candy bar designs, the CDMA- and analog-roaming-equipped KX444 for Verizon offers several improvements, including rubberized edges and a speakerphone. Above all, we’re talking basics here, as the screen is nothing fancy, and the overall feature set is meager. That said, this sturdy, affordable phone could find a welcome home on the belt of anyone who craves push-to-talk services for voice calls.

Palm Treo 700p Best smart phone

Palm Treo 700p

Following in the footsteps of its older sibling, the Palm Treo 700p picks up where the Treo 650 left off and adds a host of features to make this top-notch smart phone even better. Improvements include EV-DO support, a 1.3-megapixel camera, dial-up networking capabilities, and increased memory. Of course, all isn’t perfect (still no Wi-Fi), but the Treo’s winning combination of form factor and performance is hard to beat.

LG VX8300 Most-improved phone

LG VX8300

The LG VX8300, the company’s third EV-DO cell phone for Verizon Wireless, aims to improve on some of the drawbacks that saddled the previous VX8100. And for the most part, it succeeds. Packaged in a similar design and offering a comparable range of high-end features as its predecessor, the LG VX8300 provides improved functionality and slightly better performance. As is typical with Verizon, features such as Bluetooth are limited in scope, though we were glad to see support for e-mail this time around.

Because nothing says holiday excess like, uh, a button-down business desktop, it’s good that the Lenovo ThinkCentre A52 displays its IBM heritage with a smart design and strong business features. The system also includes several decidedly business-friendly security utilities that go above and beyond what we’ve seen in other recent small-business systems.

Creature Scylla S301 Best Media Center PC

Creature Scylla S301

Aptly named for the sea creature of Greek mythology, the Scylla S301 from Creature HTPC is the best high-end home-theater PC we’ve seen all year. It’s a monster of a Media Center system with an equally monstrous $5,400 price tag. But for your money, you get more gear than that in many high-end systems, with bonuses that include a GeForce 7800 GTX video card and 1TB of hard drive space.

Apple Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz Best desktop for creative pros

Apple Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz

The current Power Mac G5′s industrial design–a gleaming, silent, almost spooky tower of power–will probably stand in museums long after Moore’s Law sweeps away its components. And though we think Mac fans should give more consideration to Apple’s tendency to overprice, underconfigure, and minimally support its desktops, including this top-of-the-line Apple Power Mac G7 dual 2.5GHz system, it’s hard to argue that the company doesn’t have a knack for melding form and function.

Toshiba Qosmio G35 Most tricked-out multimedia laptop

Toshiba Qosmio G35

This third-generation Qosmio delivers a best-in-class multimedia experience that’s built on a state-of-the-art set of components, including Intel’s new Core Duo chipset. It also boasts virtually every feature under the sun, including an HD-DVD drive. As with past models, the Qosmio G35 offers one of the best 17-inch wide-screen displays around and an integrated TV tuner, as well as a full complement of ports and connections, a rocking set of stereo speakers, and an unparalleled set of multimedia controls.

Sony VAIO SZ Best balance between portability and usability

Sony VAIO SZ

The 3.8-pound Sony VAIO SZ isn’t the lightest laptop available–even within Sony’s lineup–but it manages to be eminently portable without sacrificing a readable screen or a usable keyboard. Even better, the VAIO SZ has all of the features a business user will need, from an integrated microphone and Webcam for videoconferencing to a fingerprint scanner for security, not to mention a solid array of components, such as an Intel Core Duo processor and an Nvidia graphics card.

Lenovo ThinkPad X60s Best ultraportable notebook for business

Lenovo ThinkPad X60s

The latest model in the ThinkPad X series, the ultraportable X60s improves upon the previous generation by adding a few more features, including built-in WWAN connectivity and the latest Intel Core Duo processors. It still lacks a built-in optical drive, but the X60s does include that fabulous ThinkPad keyboard, making it the better choice if comfortable typing is more valuable to you than viewing CDs and DVDs. And if you can do without a built-in optical drive, we think the ThinkPad X60s delivers a best-in-class balance of comfort, performance, battery life, and portability.

Gateway NX100X Best budget ultraportable design

Gateway NX100X

With a sleek black case, brushed-aluminum details, and dark blue status lights, the NX100X looks like a minimalist’s dream laptop. The impact on your bottom line will also be minimal: the NX100X costs significantly less than competitive models. Though that minimalism extends to features as well (among other omissions, the NX100X lacks a built-in optical drive), if you’re looking for an extremely portable and stylish laptop and can do without a built-in optical drive, the Gateway NX100X is a solid, economical choice.

HP Compaq Presario V5000Z Most affordable laptop

HP Compaq Presario V5000Z

The Presario V5000Z is a solid all-around notebook for a student or a home user who needs good–not great–performance and a fairly complete set of basic features, including a LightScribe double-layer optical drive and a multiformat media-card reader. Best of all, its starting price of just $549 makes the V5000Z one of the least expensive base models on the market.

Dell XPS M1710 Best gaming laptop

Dell XPS M1710

With the XPS M1710, the company adds just a few aesthetic curlicues to the same basic form factor found on Dell’s other 17-inch wide-screen models, upgrades it to Intel’s Core Duo platform, and drops in Nvidia’s new top-shelf GeForce Go 7900 GTX GPU. The unsurprising result: an extremely pricey system that extends the company’s dominance of our gaming benchmark tests and solidifies Dell’s reputation as the vendor to beat in the gaming laptop market. If you’re a hard-core gamer who’s looking to play the newest games (Oblivion, F.E.A.R.) at the highest settings, this is the best system that (a lot of) money can buy.

Panasonic ToughBook 74 Best laptop for the extremely accident-prone

Panasonic ToughBook 74

It’s expensive and bulky, but the Panasonic ToughBook 74 incorporates some of the design principles used for its military-grade laptops into a more consumer-friendly “business rugged” model that’s designed to withstand everyday abuses. We tossed this thing around, dropped it on cement, and spilled a total of five cups of coffee on its keyboard–still running. Given the ToughBook 74′s $2,999 starting price, though, we recommend it for users who are likely to do most of their computing beyond the office, airplane, or hotel room and whose laptop will need to withstand extreme abuse.

Sony VAIO UX Best microtablet

Sony VAIO UX

The tiny Sony VAIO UX has a 4.5-inch (diagonal) wide-screen display that slides up to reveal a QWERTY keypad. Despite its small size, the UX runs on a full-fledged laptop CPU, a full version of Windows XP, and a touch-screen interface. Weighing 1.2 pounds, the VAIO UX has 1,024×600 native resolution display, is equipped with some pretty modest components, and has tons of networking connections. And–remarkable for such a small device–the Sony VAIO UX makes room for two cameras as well as a biometric fingerprint scanner, headphone and mic jacks, a USB port, and a Memory Stick slot. Unfortunately, the small form factor comes at a steep price: $1,799.

MacBook Pro Best laptop design

MacBook Pro

With the MacBook Pro, Apple hasn’t radically redesigned the PowerBook form factor–and that’s a good thing. The sleek, aluminum MacBook Pro is slightly wider, thinner, and lighter than the 15-inch PowerBook, striking a successful compromise between portability and usability. What’s more, the MacBook Pro delivers unparalleled style and a solid set of features and software, though a few transitional performance issues keep it from rivaling the most powerful PC laptops.

Dell XPS M2010 Best laptop that’s not a laptop

Dell XPS M2010

Something between an all-in-one desktop PC and a proper laptop, the XPS M2010 accommodates a foldout 20-inch display, a detachable Bluetooth keyboard, a premium set of components, and most of the trappings of a modern Media Center PC, including an impressive sound system; a pop-up, slot-loading DVD player; and an integrated video camera and microphone for videoconferencing. It’s a striking feat of engineering that’s sure to garner attention in a stylish home or on a multimedia-intensive sales call, although at $3,500, the target market here is clearly those for whom money is no object.

Meet Motorola i776, Nextel’s newest phone

Filed under: general, NEW BORN TO THE MARKET — boopathivenugopal @ 6:04 pm

Last month at the fall CTIA shoe, sprint assured us that it was not forgetting its Nextel fans. The carrier promised that by the end of the year it would release four iDEN-only phones for the push-to-talk-loving masses. We’ve already reviewed the Motorola i365, we’re still waiting for the already announced motorola i576, and we know that an iDEN BlackBerry is on the way. That leaves the new Motorola i775 has the final model in the quarter.

Announced Monday by Motorola and Nextel, the i776 has a flip-phone design in silver with touches of dark red. As expected, the durable design should withstand a few blows but it also is one of the slimmest Nextel flip phones at 3.39 inches by 1.8 inches by 0.8 inches.

Features include a VGA camera, stereo Bluetooth, Nextel’s second-line service, a personal organizer, a speakerphone, GPS, messaging and the full slate of Nextel Direct Connection services. The i576 is available now for $79.99 with service. Alternatively, it is $99.99 with Boost mobile’s pay-as-you-go plan.
